Dave
Klassen comes by his gypsy leanings honestly, having lived in many locations
throughout North America including Montreal, Los Angeles, North Bay, Vancouver,
New York, Toronto and now Victoria. A well-intentioned education in piano,
saxophone and guitar took a bit of a twist when Dave began his performance
career as bassist in a punk rock band.
From there, Dave and a close-knit group of friends went on to master 60's-style rock music but failed to conquer the music business. Inspired by his hero, the Yardbirds' Paul Samwell-Smith, Dave quit music at age 25 and moved on to more virtuous pursuits.
Nine years later, Dave had an opportunity to accompany his vocalist wife and a friend in a performance. Finding his passion for music rekindled, he picked up where he had left off - this time on upright bass. Strangely, he was unable to interest other musicians in acoustic punk rock, so he went on to involve himself in a number of other musical projects. He is currently a member of the Juan de Fuca Community Orchestra, the Victoria Mandolin Orchestra and several smaller groups playing vintage jazz, folk, Celtic and jug band music.
Dave was interviewed at RootsFest Music Festival in
July, 2000 by Naomi de Bruyn of GREENMAN REVIEW.
