UNSTRUNG HEROES
What an appropriate name for the first recording from the Victoria, British Columbia mandolin led group Mandolirium. Now about that picture on the back cover of the CD. Uh, well, maybe we'll talk about that later. This may be one of the most interesting recordings I've heard in years. Truly a band with a different musical vision, and it's one I like. Bandmates Mike Brooks, Rick Van Krugel and Russ Godfrey all take turns at various mandolin family instruments along with Dave Klassen on bass and vocals. Mike Nicholls (Keeper of the groove) plays drums, and a fine job he does.
This recording is as unpredictable as it is enjoyable. The band takes apparent delight in keeping the listener guessing what's next with a wide variety of exceptionally pleasing music: gypsy, arabic, celtic, bluegrass, surf and pop. Combine that diversity with Russ Godfrey's Elvis-like vocals and you have a group that defies categorization. And the most amazing of all is how well it fits musically. Beware! Come with a sense of humor if you're purchasing this one. With the first number you might temporarily be lulled into thinking this is some snoozy campfire group just having a good time. They are indeed having a good time, but these folks have big chops and know when NOT to use them.
Ah, if only THAT could be bottled and sold. Selections include:
Misirlou/Moscow Nights-The Rights of Man/Apache-Ghost Riders in the Sky/Campbell's Farewell to Red Gap-June Apple-Salt Creek/Harapj Meg Engem-Fisztorza-Fulginiti/Jezebel/Arpad's Guz/El Cumbanchero-Julia Delaney-For Those who like to Rock
A very tasty recording we'll be enjoying around here for some time. Now about that picture on the back cover... Nah.
